CLINICAL AND SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIVIDUALS UNDERGOING TREATMENT FOR THE USE OF PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES

Abstract

The consumption of psychoactive substances in Brazil and around the world has increased in recent years, challenging health professionals and raising the need to expand investigations into the factors that have intensified drug consumption in the world population. Objective: this quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive study aimed to describe the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of individuals undergoing treatment for the use of psychoactive substances. The study included 202 people hospitalized for treatment for the use of psychoactive substances. Methodology: to achieve the objectives of this research, the following instruments were used: A sociodemographic questionnaire, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, and the Screening Test for Involvement with Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs. Results:  the results showed a greater predominance of individuals aged 40 years and older, male, single, from lower-middle socioeconomic class, and with an elementary school level. The results of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale pointed to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression. And the Test for Involvement with Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs pointed out that the most used substances in these people's lives are tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and cocaine/crack, with drugs with a high risk of dependence being cocaine/crack and alcohol. Conclusion:  in view of these results, it was possible to conclude that it is urgent to think of scientific and effective methods of treatment for chemical dependence and the Disorder due to the use of psychoactive substances.
